ULTRASONIC TESTING OF WELDS ABC OF THERMAL POWER STATION

Ultrasonic Testing of welds

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is also a very popular type of Non Destructive Examination
for welds to find out the irregularities .Generally is being used for high thickness
material like Ceiling Girder , Boiler Feed Piping of 500 MW and Above and also in
Piping of P91. For P91 piping it is necessary but for ceiling girder and BFP discharge
piping it is use to avoid the use of Cobalt -60.
Ultrasonic waves are sound waves of high frequency and inaudible to human ears.
Human ears can detect sound waves of frequency 20 to 20000 cycles/sec
when the frequency exceed the wave is ultrasonic waves. Usually ultrasonic
waves of frequency ranging from 0.5 Mhz to 10 Mhz are used for  testing of
engineering materials.
Ultrasonic wave changes in its propagation due to material properties
and presence of discontinuities . The resulting changes are detected by testing
system and displayed as an indication. Indications are analysed for acceptance
as per standards.
Like radiography ultrasonic testing is to be carried out by experts only. Those
who have qualified as Level II in certificate course are only competent
person to carryout and evaluate the test record. Only standard block of material
under test is to be provided to them for calibration time to time at site. Now a-days
block from P91 material may be required by them for other material like
p11/p22 may be available with them. For benefit of construction person a purchase
specification of ultrasonic material is given below.
